Search for extraterrestrial life scientists use spectroscopic analysis

According to foreign media reports

According to foreign media reports, whether there is cosmic life outside the earth? Scientists have begun a journey to search for extrrestrial life. There are several planets in the solar system that may support the existence of life, such as Mars and some moons. Even if they do not support life now, it does not mean that they did not support it in the past. This situation is very suitable for Mars. Scientists believe that ancient Mars had a liquid water environment, so life is likely to exist. All we have to do is find traces of these lives. However, some scientists have turned their horizons outside the solar system, using data from exoplanet probes to discover planets outside the solar system, and at the same time using spectral analysis technology to discover signals of the existence of extrasolar life.

The traditional spectral analysis method can detect the atmospheric environment of exoplanets. If there is liquid water on exoplanets, its spectrum will be different. Exoplanet investigation methods such as transit method can help to discover the mystery of atmospheric composition on exoplanets. But more recently, astronomer Amite Misra of the University of Washington in the United States and his colleagues announced a new survey method. The technology relies on a substance called "dimer". The survey technology is based on the atmosphere of exoplanets. Molecules, through this method, scientists can find out whether substances such as oxygen exist in the atmosphere of exoplanets.

Spectroscopic analysis allows us to obtain the basic parameters of the atmospheres of distant planets, thus discovering those with oxygen-containing atmospheres.

When a planet passes through its stellar disk, the stellar light passes through its atmosphere and propagates in the vast universe until it is captured by our telescope, and a special device installed on the filter can investigate a specific dimer feature. at present, the object of investigation set by scientists is oxygen. Misra's research team has an astrobiologist whose task is to find oxygen-based extraterrestrial organisms. If scientists observe a strong oxygen dimer signal on a planet, it means that there is oxygen in the atmosphere of the planet, and it is very likely that there are photosynthetic organisms.

However, this method also has its limitations and needs new telescope technology to support it. At present, NASA's more advanced telescope is the Hubble Space Telescope, and its successor, the James Webb Space Telescope, will be launched in October 2018 to replace the Hubble Telescope. At that time, we will have more powerful observation capabilities and can collect spectral data of distant stars and their planetary systems, which has very positive significance for the investigation of extrasolar life.
